Project Description:

Refurbish and enhance the Youth Sports facility and Educational classrooms at the two Police Athletic League sites. These facilities having been built in 1947 and dedicated to Youth Crime Prevention and Education activities since 1956. These facilities are maintained and operated by the non-profit Police Athletic League and are soley funded by public donations. The buildings are severely in need of major repair and refurbishment to maintain safety standards and continue to service the "At Risk" children of the community.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The Police Athletic League Inc. provides the lowest cost  After School,Summer Care and Youth Sports programs in the County. The educational programs provide school pick up and stress academic and social enhancement programs for the children from Low Income and predominently minority communities. The Youth Sports Programs are offered all year round in all events and are provided to Boys and Girls ages 6 to 16. Free enrollment or scholarships are availble to all needy or indigent families. The Police Athletic League is comprised of Law Enforcement Officers who believe there are no "Bad Kids only Bad Choices". The Police Athletic League believes in leading by example and interaction with the communities youth before they enter the Criminal Justice System.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The increased serviceability of the Police Athletic League properties will provide the following advantages and benefits to the community. Increasing the ability of the facility to safely enroll more children and produce more Educational and Social programs directly impacts the numbers of children who enter the Criminal Justice System. Prevention programs are less than one quarter the costs of detention programs. The goal of the Police Athletic League is to double the enrollment of low income and "At Risk" children served at its facilities. In so doing this will have a direct effect upon the enforcement efforts and budgets of the County's Law Enforcement Agencies.
