Project Description:
FRDAP-Madison County Recreation Park. Land acquisition for park. The proposed site is approximately 100 acres, with a rectangle shape. It is generally open, with some wetland areas located primarily at the SW portion. It has some rolling hills and generally slopes to the south/southwest. The site is easily accessible from Madison (2 miles), Greenville (12 miles) and other areas of the county. It is located adjacent to the western boundary of Madison County High School and less than 1/4 mile from the proposed new middle school.
Services Provided/Benefit to State:
There is currently no true multi-use recreation park in the County. The existing recreation park located off CR 14, just south of Madison, has been heavily utilized for baseball, softball, soccer and football in the past, but has no room to expand for other activities and is being crowded by encroaching development.
Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The proposed acquisition would provide sufficient acreage (100 acres) to adequately plan for both active and passive recreation uses and would be the only park of this type in Madison County. It would be centrally located in the county and easily accessible by residents and visitors alike. The proposed location near the current high school & proposed middle school would allow for a closer cooperative relationship between the County and School Board in providing joint recreational activities, which is consistent with the recent legislation amending Chapter 163.3177 (6)(2), F.S. which encourages the collocation of public facilities such as parks with schools to the extent possible.
