Project Description:
Mote Marine Laboratory is a nonprofit, independent marine and environmental science research organization. The goals of the Russian sturgeon aquaculture project are to construct a pilot-scale controlled environment, "no-escape", "no-discharge" facility at an inland site, consisting of tanks inside greenhouses with a biological water treatemtn; to demonstrate that such a system is biosecure and that sturgeon and effluent will not escape' to demonstrate that a combination of shade, evaporative cooling, and well water will allow a recirculation sysptem to maintain adequate temperatures for sturgeon during summer heat; to ddemonstrate the economics of raising Russian sturgeon in a recirculating, controlled environment, biosecure facility; to develop captive broodstock of Russian sturgeon species.
Services Provided/Benefit to State:
The project will solve and demonstrate several critical steps to developing a multi-million dollar sturgeon aquaculture industry in Florida, create jobs, and export trade for high value seafood.
