Project Description:

Installation of medical oxygen filling system at Fire Stations 41 and 78 in the City of Tamarac and purchase of new portable oxygen tanks necessary to supply rescue system. Training all Fire Rescue employess in the operation of the oxygen filling system.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

This project will establish a supply of medical oxygen at each fire station in the City of Tamarac. Tamarac Fire Rescue will be able to replenish the oxygen used during emergency medical responses within the city. This system will provide a high capacity reserve cascade system from which portable oxygen tanks can be filled. It will no longer be necessary to depend upon an oustide vendor to replace the small portable tanks commonly used by rescue crews. The availability of on-site replenishment of oxygen will save time, insure continuity of the oxygen supply and is more cost effective than the existing contracted service. The location of this oxygen supply within the community will allow the Fire Rescue Department to provide oxygen directly to the residents of our community during disasters, such as hurricanes, when outside vendors may be unable to access the customers who are dependent upon supplemental oxygen. Many residents who reside in Tamarac are elderly and suffer from chronic pulmonary disease and cannot survive without a constant supply of supplemental oxygen. These residents rely on oxygen generators or portable oxygen tanks to provide the required amount of oxygen. Oxygen generators are dependent on a reliable electrical source to provide the life substaining oxygen and portable tanks provide a very limited source of the required element. These sources become impossible to insure during a period of extended power failure or restricted acess, both situations are frequently encountered during and immediatley following a hurricane.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The annual cost of replacing oxygen used by Tamarac Fire Rescue will be cut by approximatley 80% while increasing the reliability of the supply and permitting us to provide additional life saving services to the community. Dozens of residents will have access to a supply of oxygen for use during extended emergencies. Mortality will be reduced for those oxygen dependent residents.
