Project Description:

This appropriation will allow St. Johns County to make the necessary additional improvements to the Hastings High School in Hastings, FL, to allow the school to be used as a special needs shelter in times of emergencies.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

During the natural disasters of the past few years, it has become glaringly obvious that there is a need for additional special needs shelters to serve northeast Florida.  In fact, there are concerns that had Hurricane Floyd hit northeast Florida, it is possible that some of the shelters would have experienced flooding.

Hastings High School is located some 20 miles from the coast, and is accessable to St. Johns and Flagler Counties, allowing for special needs residents a place to evacuate safely.  It also could be used by those special needs clients who live in the low lying river communities in nearby Putnam County.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

There are no real ways to measure positive outcomes from projects such as this, other than by building additional special needs shelters, the State is significantly reducing the liklihood of loss of life from natural disasters.  It also will provide those individuals with the greatest needs a comfortable place to reside during a mandatory or voluntary evacuation.
