Project Description:

This project will complete the rehabilitation of the 1926 Mediterranean Revival style former high school building for re-use as a multi-purporse community center/government building and library.  The structure has a two story main building/auditorium with two adjoining one story wings on the north and south side.  The structure is stucco over Spanish tile brick with a barrell tile roof and is well lit with expansive double hung windows.  The building ceased to be used by the St. Johns County School Board in the 1980's and remained vacant until the 1990's.  In 1993, the structure was set for destruction until the School Alumni Association and the Town of Hastings united to save the building by buying out the demolition contract and transferring ownership of the structure to the Town of Hastings.  Today, the structure stands tall in in this rural agricultural town.

Specifically, the funds from this appropriation, coupled with the significant local match, will allow the City to rehabilitate the interior of the building, including the demolition and reconstruction of rotted and damaged interior walls, floors and ceilings; repair of historic fabric where possible, provide for modern electric, plumbing and air conditioning, along with bringing the structure into A.D.A. compliance.  All work will be done in strict compliance with the Secretary of Interior Standards.
