Project Description:

The Purpose of this project is the rehabilitation of the Alcazar Hotel/City Hall building located in downtown St. Augustine.  The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.  The City of St. Augustine occupies the northern portion of the building, while the southern portion is occupied by the historic Lightner Museum.  Constructed in 1888, the building was built with concrete and coquina.  During the age of the building (111 years old), the exterior is showing signs of extreme wear and tear.

Specifically, funds are being requested for re-roofing, repair and installation of clumns and balusters for the East Tower, water proofing of the North Facade, repair and repainting of the North soffits, repointing of decorative terra cotta and a full termite treatment of the entire building.  Currnently, the East Tower has leaks that have continued to damage drywall and until the columsn aand balisters are replaced and the re-roofing is completed, the building will continue to leak.

The City also has reason to believe, because of the method of construction, the multiple lifts made in placing the coquina, concrete, additional water is getting into the building at the cracks.  To preserve the exterior of this important structure, a sealing/water-proofing application to the entire facade is required to stop additional deterioration.  However, the north facade is in the worst condition, therefore the Architect has suggested the North facade be waterproofed as soon as possible.  Additionally, the soffit areas along the north facade are in dire need of attention.  As a major preservation effort, the City has budgeted the majority of money needed for this important and costly process, but additional funds are needed to effectively treat the entire building.
