Project Description:

Phase II - Planning and Preconstruction of a new replacement hospital for Madison County Memorial Hospital.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Madison County Memorial Hospital serves the healthcare needs for not only the citizens of Madison County, but also citizens from portions of the adjacent counties of Hamilton, Suwannee, Taylor and Jefferson and motorists traveling Interstate 10 (typically tourist).  The majority of its patients are elderly citizens and indigents.  Currently, the services provided are:  Emergency room care, minor outpatient surgery, Respiratory and Physical Therapy, Home Health, Radiology, Ultrasound, Mammography, Lab and two rural health clinics.

The hospital, built in 1954, is a 501(c)(3) corporation and is located in a dependent special district.  The addition of a patient wing over 20 years ago has been the only major renovation sice the original hospital was erected in 1954.  As an older facility, there is the continuous challenge of maintaining and upgrading an outdated facility.  The repairs and upgrades needed for our current facility are so extensive that it is more practical and less costly to replace the hospital than to upgrade the existing facility.  Currently, the hospital is experiencing the critical need for expansion of services and space.  Preliminary studies and out-migration data show us the services such as outpatient surgery and treatment of cardiac, cancer, and OBGYN leave our county at an astounding 76.1% rate.  These are services our hospital could provide if our facility was enlarged, updated and equipped to handle these services.  Madison County citizens are traveling over 60 miles away to obtain medical care they could receive in their hometown.  The elderly citizens cannot physicall withstand long-distance travel, and the indigent patients cannot afford to travel out-of-town.

A 1997 study shows that there will be an estimated 16.1% growth in population through 2010 for Madison County and a 10.6% growth in residents 65 and older.  Madison County and other rural areas of Florida are already seeing an influx of people moving from urban areas (out-of-state and in-state) due to the overcrowding.  It is important that the rural communities of Florida have the latest technology in medical equipment and modern facilities necessary to meet the healthcare needs of Florida's growing population.
