Project Description:

Use existing land to construct a Senior Wellness Center to extend the current scope of services from supportive to include occupational and recreational therapy.  The Center's mission is to improve the quality of life by offering educational and social activities to all seniors, including those with physical and/or cognitive impairments.  A Wellness Center will provide a community continuum of care able to enhance motor skills by offering seniors an opportunity to work with well trained occupational and recreational therapists.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The Senior Center serves 10 cities with an approximate population of 84,200 people age 65 and older, who live within the Northwest sector of Broward County (Source: 1999 Statistical Abstract & Fact Book for Greater Fort Lauderdale.)  The Wellness Center could help maintain or improve physical well-being by keeping seniors active in their community and avoiding the need for premature institutionalization.

The State would benefit by assisting frail elders to remain at home as long as possible and by allowing seniors to age in a place because they can utilize a community Wellness Center.  This approach should decrease the number of unnecessary nursing home admissions and curtail Medicaid expenditures.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

In addition to augmenting the Senior Center's capability to offer transportation and socialization opportunities for seniors, a Wellness Program would deliver community Health Support.  A Wellness Center would enable seniors to avoid or delay the need for institutionalization.
