Project Description:
Flagler County has applied for a special category grant through the Division of Historic Resources for funding to develop and interpret the recently excavated ruins of the Mala Compra Plantation, which was the home of General Joseph Hernandez, Florida's first delegate to the United States Congress. Mr. Hernandez was the first Congressional member of Hispanic descent. This appropriation will allow the County to take the necessary steps to construct pavilions over the architectural remains of the main house and kitchen to provide immediate protection from the weather. In addition, this phase will allow the County to hire the services of professional archaeologists to further excavate the remaining foundations, perform artifact conservation, architectural and cultural resource interpretation, flora and fauna classification and interpretation, and the development of education information, displays and exhibits for public interpretation. The services of an architectural conservation professional will also be necessary to make recommendations for immediate and long term stabilization of the architectural remains and to perform any immediate stabilization that may be necessary. The final phase of this project, which will be undertaken in a future grant request, will seek funding to enclose and finish the museum structure. NOTE: This project was heard by the Flagler County Commission on several occasions, but I was not able to determine the appropriate date before the deadline to submit this project.

This preservation project will ensure that current and future generations will have the opportunity to visit the home of and learn about Florida's first delegate to Congress.

By protecting this historic resource, more individuals will have the opportunity to visit the Mala Compra Plantation.
