Project Description:

The Ichetucknee River is a designated resource of regional significance. The recharge area for the river is defined as the Ichetucknee Trace.  The trace contains the sinks for Cannon, Clay Hole & Rose Creek.  In addition, the trace contains sinkholes, limerock mines and fine porous soils.  The trace is defined in the Columbia County  Evaluation & Appraisal Report  at the 75' contour.  At the 75' contour, the trace extends from the head spring into the City of Lake City proper.   Due to the significance of the trace, the Department of Community Affairs & the Department of Environmental Protection has required as  part of the Columbia County Evaluation and Appraisal Report that Columbia County look at the feasibility and implementation of a utility in portions of the trace.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The Ichetucknee Trace is recognized as an extremely fragile area since it contains three major sinks.  The Trace feeds through the aquifer directly into the Ichetucknee River, and conditions which affect the Trace ultimately affect the river, one of Florida's premier tourist attractions.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

It is important that the State of Florida protect this environmentally sensitive area.  Much of this land is considered by its highest and best use to be residential.  The ultimate goal would be to eliminate septic tanks on all but very low density parcels. Toward this end, Columbia County is requesting these funds to complete the needed feasibility studies.
