Project Description:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Institute on Urban Policy and Commerce at Florida A & M University was established to develop comprehensive urban strategies and partnerships to address critical social, economic, and physical issues and concerns in Florida's urban and inner city communities.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

 

 

 

 

 

1) Research and recommend strategies to address critical issues facing underserved populations in urban core communities

2) Establishment of regional urban centers to be located in the inner cities of St. Petersburg, Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, Tampa, West Palm Beach, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Pensacola and Miami

3) Development and maintenance of a data base relating to inner city areas

4) Training of residents in urban core communities in civic involvement and leadership, and training/internships of college students interested in approaches to community planning and design

5) Assistance with the planning, development and capacity building of urban area non-profit organizations, as well as collaboration with governmental entities

6) Support of community development efforts of inner city areas, neighborhood-based organizations and municipal agencies

7) Influence the equitable allocation and stweardship of federal, state and local financial resources

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

 

 

 

 

 

By providing assistance in developing positive, solution-oriented strategies to address the very critical issues facing urban core communities, the Institute on Urban Policy and Commerce anticipates a measurable decrease in crime, unemployment, drug use and abuse, and teen pregnancy, and a measurable increase in employment, economic development, entrepreneurial opportunity and community empowerment within Florida's urban core communities.
