Project Description:

Sexual Trauma Recovery Center provides therapy to individuals who have been sexually abused.  The Center treats victims from ages 2 1/2 through adulthood.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Services provided at the center include: private and group counseling, responding to the calls to the abuse hotline, treatment plans for the entire family, community outreach and prevention services.  An estimated 32% of children who have been abused will become abusive themselves.  Through treatment and prevention programs, future crime may be prevented.

Welfare and sexual abuse are intertwined in at least two ways.  Children who grow up poor, especially those with unmarried mothers, face an increased risk of being abused.  Abused children are in turn more likely to have problems that could lead them to welfare as adults.  Sexually abused girls, for instance are more likely to become teenage mothers.  Teenage mothers are more likely to drop out of school.  Dropouts, in turn, face reduced job prospects.  In addition, once on welfare, the abused often experience other problems such as; addiction, depression and violent relationships.  All these problems affect the state's welfare system.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

State measurement guidelines apply.

Sadly, the demand for services continues to grow.  The Center treated over 250 patients last year.  Research indicates that without treatment, victims of sexual abuse may indulge in drug and alcohol abuse, suffer from eating disorders and experience failure in school and work.  Detailed documentation is available upon request.
