Project Description:

The SOSA Program is an alternative to suspension with two middle schools participating. Housed in the Greater Union First Baptist Church and operated in conjunction with Act Corporation (a Volusia County mental health agency) and area law enforcement agencies, SOSA is designed to expand a student's self esteem, increase interpersonal communications skills, and teach effective behavior skills.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The SOSA Program will provide educational services and academic assistance to the suspended student in a structured, supervised setting away from the assigned school. Individual, group, and family counseling will be provided by Act Corporation; DeLand Police Department/Volusia County Sheriff's Department will provide weekly instruction in drug education. Additionally, Stetson University students will be used as volunteer tutors for students. The prevention/intervention services provided to students will increase academic and behavioral performance and thus benefit the state in future expenditures in the area of corrections and welfare.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

To reduce the number of out of school suspension days at identified schools. To improve the academic performance of SOSA students. To actively involve more parents/guardians with identified schools in promoting students' success and achievement. To involve all community agencies in working collaboratively to reduce secondary students' involvement with the juvenile justice system.
