Project Description: |
The purpose of Phase II is to remove the accumulated sediment from the bottom of the lake. This sediment accumlated through the historical discharge of untreated stormwater and secondary treated wastewater treatment plant effluent. The sources of these discharges have been removed and this project will restore the lake bottom to its original condition. Removal of the sediments will improve water quality in the lake. |

Services Provided/Benefit to State: |
Cooter Pond is a part of the Tsala Apopka Chain of Lakes, which is widely used for recreational fishing and boating. The lake is also bordered by the state run Rail to Trails and is directly accessible from the trail. In addition, Cooter Pond is a highly visible landmark of the downtown Inverness area. Restoration of the lake and removal of the polluted sediments will allow the lake to be used for recreational activities and provide an attractive backdrop for the downtown Inverness area. |
