Project Description:

The BRIDGES Program is an intervention program built on cooperation and collaboration between parents, schools, and community services. BRIDGES addresses escalating behaviors and/or at risk issues of identified youth that are between the ages of 10 and 17. This comprehensive family based progrm is deisgned to provide support essential to famlies and seeks to create better communication, build healthier behaviors in youth and protect teens. By fostering positive family life styles, building effective communication skills, and using appropriate problem solving techniques, families are more likely to understand and use appropriate behaviors.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Parents and the identified youth attend weekly sessions in a supportive small group environment. Parent/adolescent information, training and support sessions include youth and family assessments, development of personal and family goal, awareness of individual/family strengths and enhancement of parent and youth's sense of self worth. Participants learn to identify sources of conflict, the underlying causes and to develop problem solving skills. Weekly staffing at each site and limited case management by program staff enables assessment of the family/home/school environment, assist the yout and thier family in attaining personal and family goals and helps to identify, advocate, and assist families in obtaining access to identified school and commuity services. This benefits the state in reducing the involvement of these participants in the juvenile justice system and in CINS/FINS programs.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

To increase the number of participating families who successfully complete the program. To increase the number of families who show an improvement in the family discipline practices and family communication. To reduce the number of behavior problems of youth who have successfully completed the BRIDGES program and are enrolled in school. To reduce the number of re-offenders of the youth who have successfully completed the BRIDGES program and are on the Community Control Status or Commitment Status.
