Project Description:
The program is being operated jointly by the Citrus County School System and the Citrus County Sheriff's Office. The program brings together a team of dedicated professionals from the school system and law enforcement to plan, develop and pilot a school-based program which provides an alternative to the traditional out-of-school suspension practices currently in place. The school principal or designee will recommend students for this suspension option after gaining parent/guardian consent. This intervention program has been developed in response to parents/guardians, school personnel, and law enforcement with concerns that the current school policy and practice of off-campus suspension does not adequately deter students from committing or repeating the offense they have been suspended for, and also the lack of a structured environment due to many parents/guardians being in the work force. The program would provide meaningful experiences for students and is designed to help students change their behavior. The program would provide a place for students to be supervised rather that engaging in possible criminal activity if left alone. The program would offer the community and school a resource to complete community service projects. The program would provide another opportunity for a school system and law enforcement partnership that would further enhance community safety and enhance community appearance.
Services Provided/Benefit to State:
Students suspended from school and that are referred to the program will work in different county sites supervised by Sheriff's Department personnel. This is the alternative to staying at home possibly unsupervised and getting into trouble. The intention of this program is to reduce juvenile crime and the number of juveniles processed through the juvenile justice system.
Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The program is intended to be utilized as a mentorship program between law enforcement/school officials and the students referred to the program. It is intended to keep the student's suspension from school time more productive and, hopefully, give the student some sense of accomplishment after completion of their assignment at a work site. It is also the goal of the program that the students will not want to be put into such an intensive out of school suspension again, and that they will rectify their negative behavior.
