Project Description:

The Memorial Healthcare System serves as the tax assisted hospital district for residents in South Broward County and the surrounding area.  The Hospital District proposes to work with the Workforce Development Board, WAGES Coalition and Broward County Health Department in a pilot project to provide hospital-based childcare for mildly ill children.  Parents eligible for this service will be WAGES clients and parents receiving subsidized childcare who need the service in order to report to work.  This pilot project is designed to be replicable throughout the State.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

It is estimated that young children are absent from childcare due to illness approximately 10 days per year.  This is especially significant in families with more than one child.  For single parents or parents in families where two incomes are needed to meet expenses, these sick days can put the parents at risk of losing their jobs because of excess absenteeism.  Parents will be able to report to work on days when the children are in the hospital based childcare center.  WAGES clients will be able to avoid sanctions and continue their progress toward self-sufficiency.  Children will be provided with age appropriate activities suitable for the stage of recovery from their illness, immunization review, and application assistance for State KidCare coverage.  Employers will benefit from reduction in employee absenteeism.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Reduced loss days at work, increased job retention, updated immunizations, KidCare applications.
