Project Description:

The Crystal River/Kings Bay system, an Outstanding Florida Waterway, has experienced a proliferation of "Lyngbya sp.", a deleterious organism, since the 1993 "No Name Storm".  Lynbya has become a dominant species in many portions of Kings Bay and is responsible for destruction of native habitats as well as posing a hazard to navigation.  Due to its maloderous nature it also has a negative impact on recreational use of the Bay and is a detriment to local diving and tourism industries.

The Surface Water Improvement and Management (SWIM) Plan prepared by SWFWMD identifies Lyngbya as a target for restortation along with issues of water clarity, nutrients, and sedimentation.  The Crystal River/Kings Bay system is identified as Crystal River (13411) and "Crystal Bay" (1345A) in the 303(d) list of waterbodies as published by FDEP.  These areas are both ranked as high priority with "Nutrients" listed as the parameter of concern.

The scope of work of the project is removal of Lyngbya and sediment from the waterway bottom by vacuuming and dredging.  The pilot project area shall consist of approximatley 112 acres of the headwaters of Crystal River.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

This is a 112 acre pilot project for what is anticipated to be a long term restoration of the Kings Bay/Crystal River water system which is listed (as a part of Crystal River) as an Outstanding Florida Waterway.  The Crystal River and Kings bay (shown as "Crystal Bay") are also designated as a high priority in the 303(d) list of areas of concern.

As noted in the SWIM report, Lynbya sp. has, since the 1993 No-name Storm event, become a dominant species in this waterbody system.  In addition the increased sedimentation of the bay and river bottoms has contributed to the reduction of water clarity which is listed as a primary concern.  Removal of both the Lyngbya and restoration of the historical "hard bottom" of this specific portion (headwaters) of the water system will not only significantly improve the water clarity of the test area but will produce a better quality source for the remainder of the system.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

This program will permit City, WMD and other agency analyists to observe the short and long term effects by allowing visual and measurable contrasts of the areas of the common water system.  Removal of the Lyngbya will also allow increased sunlight penetration to the bottom thus promoting re-establishment of native aquatic plant species.
