Project Description:

Reforestation of approximately one and two tenths (1.2) miles of canal Right of Way along the C-11 canal, adjacent to the Town of Davie, starting at Davie Road and going westward to University Drive, in cooperation with the South Florida Water Management District.  This project was included in the Conference report for the 1999-2000 budget, but was vetoed by the Governor.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Implementation of this project will result in a number of benefits including flood hazard mitigation, support and enhancement of business redevelopment efforts and improvements of a public resource.  The removal of exotic (non-native) trees along the canal is important in order to mitigate for flood hazards, resulting from storms and hurricanes.  Exotic vegetation presents a hazard to public and private property.  The removal of the exotic vegetation without extensive reforestation will have a significant impact on the public use of the area.  The Town, working through its Downtown Redevelopment Agency is improving the entrance to the downtown business district, along the C-11 canal.  This project supports the efforts to revitalize the business district.  The Town of Davie has had a recreational greenways trail along the C-11 canal for a number of years.  The removal of exotic vegetation in this area, without extensive reforestation will have a negative impact on the public use of this greenways resource.  This project supports the downtown business district's redevelopment efforts which will: provide for removal of exotic trees, reforestation of the canal bank with native plants and trees, and the extension of the Town's greenways trail.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Reduction in the number of exotic trees along 1.2 miles of canal.  Reduced flooding and workload in the event of a hurricane.  Increase the number of native trees along 1.2 miles of canal.  Enhancements of 1.2 miles of greenways trail.  Beautified entrance to the Town's business district.
