Project Description: |
The Miami-Dade Juvenile Assessment Center is a centralized processing, referral, and evaaluation center for all juveniles arrested in Miami-Dade County. The facility, which opened in late October, 1997, has served over 37,000 arrested juveniles, and allows representatives from law enforcement and social services to work together under one roof to provide a complete range of services at the initial stages of the juvenile's involvement with the Juvenile Justice System. |

Services Provided/Benefit to State: |
Major innovations include the positive identification and centralized booking of a complete juvenile arrest population, an integrated information system, the provision of a juvenile justice screening and a substance abuse/mental health assessment of arrested juveniles when intervention is most effective. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
Reduce the average time of 4 to 6 hours previously spent by a police officer with a juvenile arrest to less than one hour, resulting in an estimated additional 100,000 hours of police time being returned to the streets of our community each year. Coordination of services combined with early intervention allows for more appropriate referrals and effective use of limited resources. |
