Project Description:

The Juvenile Justice Role Model Development Program at FSU/FAMU is designed to train professionals to meet a critical shortage of strong, positive role models for at-risk youth and young people. It's mission is threefold: To use a multicultural curriculum through which students obtain professional, academic and practical training and experience in the field of juvenile justice. To establish a Human Resoruce Development Center for Florida, which will serve as a clearinghouse for employement in public and private sector juvenile justice agencies throughout the state and nation. To provide valuable services to the community through the implementation of an afterschool program and community service hours required of students.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The Program has already provided training to more than 6,000 students, increasing the quality of personnel involved with the juvenile justice system, placing 100 interns in communities across the state. While training, the students have provided more than 15,000 hours of community services. Many of these hours were completed as part of the FSU After-School Sports Academy, which provides academic, social development and sports activities in a unique and carefully designed manner.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The number of interns with advanced training, that provide aid and serve as positive role models for youth will continue at even higher rates as the program matures and develops. During the upcoming year the Program should see over 1,000 students receiving training, 8,000 hours of community service generated, and more than 20 graduates will be certified as specialists in the field of juvenile justice, moving on to work in a variety of positions within the State.
