Project Description: |
The Old Armory houses the Tallahassee Senior Center and is a 25,200 square-foot complex that was constructed as the Leon County National Guard Armory in 1935. The complex was used as a National Guard Armory until the early 1970's. From the mid 1950s until 1987, the second floor auditorium (guard drill floor) also was used for a roller skating program. Amateur basketball games were played in the auditorium. In 1978, the City of Tallahassee renovated and opened the first floor for the Senior Center program, including The Old Armory Art Studio and Gallery. The funds requested will stabilize and preserve this historic building from future endangerment through the construction of a new roofing system over the entire main building; and to create a permanent historic/educational display. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
New roofing system and display completed. It is anticipated that the addition of the interpretive historical display will increase annual visitation by approximately 25%, increasing to 13,750 annual visitors. Citizens will be educated by the display on the contributions of the local National Guard to the community, as well as the contributions of the Old Armory to the social, cultural and recreational lives of local citizens throughout most of the 20th century. |
