Project Description:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Control of nuisance chironomidae (blind mosquitos) in Lake Monroe through installation of attraction lights, operation of a targeted larvicide/ adulticide program, and introduction of midge predatory fish

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

 

 

 

 

 

The effective mitigation of the historically negative impact of blind mosquitos on the economic viability and overall quality of life for downtown Sanford and neighboring communities in Volusia County.  The success of this pilot project will establish nuisance abatement protocol for a statewide problem

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

 

 

 

 

 

Increased access to downtown, waterfront and marina in Sanford.  Increased public utilization of Lake Monroe, part of the St. Johns River system, for recreation.
