Project Description:

Adjudicated youth live with AMI staff on Panama Key Island for six months while transitioning from a Level 6 residential program to the Level 2 non-residential program at the Pinellas Marine Institute.  This funding request is to provide for basic health and safety needs of the juveniles and the family living on Panama Key Island.  The 1998 legislature appropriated $125,000 for the provision of electric power to the island - they had previously been dependent on a diesel generator and propane gas for basic health and safety needs.  In order to complete the conversion to electical power, the Panama Key Island program needs peripheral electrical equipment, including cable, transformers, and electric distribution equipment (estimated at $30,000).  In addition, funds are requested for Incinolet Carefree Model Electric Toilets ($10,000) and dock and piling repairs ($10,000).  Students and staff have used porta-lets for sanitary needs because the island did not have electricity - a septic system is not feasible due to the low elevation of the island.  In order to protect the ecosystem of the island and surrounding waters, it has been recommended that electric toilets be installed.  In addition, students and staff must travel to and from the island by boat - essential dock and piling repairs are necessary to ensure their safety.
