Project Description:

Associated Marine Institutes, a non-profit organization, is proposing a Scholarship Matching Fund where the Florida legislature match dollar for dollar the money raised by the volunteer Boards of Trustees of the 32 AMI programs in Florida for the continued education of its graduates.  AMI is requesting $256,000 the first year (enough to send ten students to community college or vocational school from each AMI program - at approximately $1,600 per student for tuition and books); $384,200 the second year (15 students per AMI program); and $512,000 the third year (20 students per AMI program).

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Increased educational levels, increased life management skill, increased employment levels, decreased crime rates and lower recidivism rates for AMI graduates who attend community college or vocational schools and who are employed.  AMI follows every student for a minimum of three years, in concert with all the statistics on recidivism that are kept, AMI will keep and measure statistics on these outcome measures.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Education services and job training skills will be provided through enrollment in community colleges or vocational institutions.  AMI closely tracks every one of its program graduates for a minimum of three years.  Statistics show that there is no greater deterrent to recidivism than education.  The higher the last grade finished the higher the chances for a successful life.
