Manatee County has no dedicated, stand-alone environmental classroom for public school and college use. This state-owned, county managed 350 acre conservation park affords the opportunity to bring coastal and marine environmental, historic, and archaeological primary studies accessible to 8,000 students in the Manatee County School system, Manatee Community College and the University of South Florida (Sarasota Campus). The property is host to the Portevant Mound site listed in the National Historic Register and over 48 other archaeological sites listed with the Department of State. The lease agreement with the Division of State Lands has approved a management plan providing for environmental education as a pre-requisite for management of the property. The community use portion of the structure affords a sheltered gathering location for visitors to the park for interpretative displays, archaeological, cultural and historic research and public functions associated with park activities. |
