Project Description:

Research carried out under this program is broad-based including studies on race track, and industry economic well-being; equine exercise physiology, sports medicine and pharmacology, and diseases which affect racing animals.  Supports research needed to solve many problems facing the racing industry.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The increased allocation over the FY 99-00 level to this project will help sustain and improve the efficiency of the pari-mutuel industry.  An increase is needed to make more rapid progress in the study of diseases and issues of particular importance to the racing industry.  Additionally to correct for increased costs that have occurred since this program was first initiated in 1993.

Some of the projects made possible by these funds include the study of equine protozoal myelitis, Rhodococcus equi, bone-joint-tendon disease in equine athletes; airway disease; and equine drug metabolism.

Grants are awarded annually, competitively based on scientific merit and relevance to the pari-mutuel industry.  Each year nearly twice as many grant applications are received as can be funded.  The requested increase will permit funding of a larger percentage of projects submitted, and provide more important, useful and beneficail information the the pari-mutuel industry.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Examples of practical and the successful outcomes of this program include:

Helmets not specifically designed for jai-alai, primarily ice hockey helmets, (1) were in widespread use, (2) do not provide suitable protection from impact, and (3) the common practice of selecting helmets simply based on their meeting standards for other sports is inappropriate.

Development of an improved vaccine for the control of influenza in horse.

Development of more accurate and easy to use methods of determining when a mare is ready to be bred.

A slight restriction in food intake by racing greyhounds improves racing performance.  Racing greyhounds do not require excessive amounts of protein (raw meat) in their diet.  The can be fed an inexpensive high fat, low protein diet.

"Milk shaking" horses (administering bicarbonate of soda before a race)may alter performance and should be banned.
