Project Description:

To complete a missing trail section between the existing, opened trail and the federally funded overpass at S.R. 434.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

A 3.7 mile portion of the Florida National Scenic Trail has been paved in Seminole County between the municipalities of Winter Springs and Oveido and has been open for over one year.  The Florida National Scenic Trail coincides with the Cross Florida Trail for approximately 10 miles within Seminole County.  This portion of the trail is heavily used by the citizens of ths region.  Approximately 10,000 people use the trail on an average month.  The trail has helped establish a sense of community among the many immediate neighborhoods it traverses.  The Cross Florida Trail is one of the great success stories of various Legislative efforts.  These include the development of an alternative means of transportation, pollution reduction, provision of recreational amenities within an urban area, and the preservation of green spaces.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Approximately one mile of paved trail connecting an existing portion of the trail to a funded overpass.

The Cross Florida Trail (13.7 miles) is already owned by the State of Florida, leased to the Office of Greenway and Trails and managed under a sub-leased agreement to Seminole County.

The management of these lands is directed by an adopted management plan, which was coordinated and accepted by the State Office of Greenways and Trails.

the Cross Florida Trail is located in the Orlando metropolitan area within Seminole County.

The majority of the Cross Florida Trail is designated as part of the Florida National Scenic Trail.  This is one of eight national scenic trails that were designated by Congress and the only national scenic trail in the state of Florida.  The Florida Scenic Trail is planned to be in excess of 1,000 miles traversing the state.

The Cross Florida Trail will eventually connect natural areas of state significance, the Spring Hammock Preserve and the Little Big Econlockhatchee State Forest within Seminole County.

The Cross Florida Trail will ultimately connect multiple jurisdictions within Seminole County, including Oviedo, Winter Springs, Longwood, Lake Mary and Sanford.  The trail segment within Seminole County provides an important east - west connection across the state for the Florida National Scenic Trail.

The trail is anticipated to increase usage as it is connected to Orange County to the South (connecting to the Cady Way trail) and to Lake County to the West via various planned trail connections, ultimately linking to both Mt. Dora and Clermont.
