Project Description:

This appropriation would provide the necessary funding to provide a 10% across the board pay increase to the teachers in the Flagler County School Board.  These funds would be appropriated to the Flagler County School Board for their inclusion in the next pay increase package.  During the Flagler County Legislative Delegation, the Delegation was approached by a number of teachers and administrators who were all calling for the same priority, more funds for teacher pay.  As a result, I am making this request in Clay, Flagler and St. Johns County and with Rep. Kosmas in Volusia County.  Both the Commissioner of Education and the Governor have addressed this issue in their budget recommendations, but at a level considerably lower than 10%.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Our teachers have been dramatically underpayed for years, in some cases, working for more than 10-12 years before their salary reaches $30,000. In my years in business, I have learned two important lessions when it comes to compensation for employees.  First, pay your good employees well in order to retain them.  Secondly, an employee who feels like they are being compensated well for a job well done will continue to work harder.  Certainly, this has worked in my business, as my family business in approaching its 40th year in business.  I believe that this time tested business philospohy, when implemented for our educators, will solve two problems, recruitment and retention.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The district will have the resources to recruit, retain and reward excellent teachers.
