Project Description:
Acquisition of a 22-acre parcel of land adjoining the existing Showalter Park in order to extend and expand the recreational opportunities for the residents of the Town of Century and northern Escambia County.
Services Provided/Benefit to State:
The proposed acquisition would implement many of the goals, objectives and priorities of the State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP). This plan calls for local governments providing and managingg user-based recreational facilities to local residents. Funding to acquire this 22-acre parcel will expand the recreational opportunities for the entire population of the northern-end of Escambia County through implementation of the following goals as stated in the SCORP: to acquire, retain, manage, and inventory public lands to provide recreation, conservation, and related public benefits; to acquire and manage public lands to offer visitors and residents increased outdoor recreation experiences; to protect and expand park systems throughout the State; and to encourage the use of public and private financial and other resources for the development of recreational opportunities a the state and local levels.
Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Increase in economic development/job opportunities; provision of additional public recreational facilities; provision of after-school supervised activities for children; provision of additional recreational facilities for handicapped/disabled residents.
