Project Description: |
A bay scallop hatchery at the University of South Florida for stock enhancement, restoration, and commercial development. Bay scallop adults will be spawned at the hatchery to produce viable larvae. These larvae will be held and cultured at the hatchery until they reach approximately 5 mm in size. At this time the scallop seed can be transported to Citrus County for enhancement, restoration and commercial purposes. |

Services Provided/Benefit to State: |
Provice scallop seed for enhancement, restoration and commercial purposes. To help restore bay scallop stocks since natural populations are too low to recuperate on their own. Restoring bay scallop stocks will not only help provide a sustaining natural population but allow recreational scalloping to return to much of Florida's West Coast. In addition to restoring bay scallop stocks along the West Coast of Florida, the scallop seed provided by the hatchery can be used for economic development of commercial bay scallop aquaculture operations. |
