Project Description:

The City of Wilton Manors is in the process of redeveloping its downtown central business district "Wilton Manors Drive."  The City has been developing plans through consensus building in the comminity by utiliztion of various stake holder forums.  These "Charrettes" were formulatd with cooperation of the FAU-FIU Joint Center for Environmental and Urban Planning through a grant funded by the Eatward Ho! initiative.  Wilton Manors has approved local legislation which created an Arts and Entertainment District on Wilton Drive.  The City's Vision is to create an atmosphere of pedestrian traffic along an inviting street with lush landscaping and architecurally attractive business.  Local private investment in this project has been phenomenal.  The shoppes of Wilton Manors Center has completed a two million dollar renovation; a law firm has invested nearly one million dollars in renovation of a ninety person facility, a major drug store project of $750,000 has been constructed, a major grocery store chain has submitted plans for a renovation project, and permitting for this project will begin January 2000.  FDOT is currently in the process of a $1.7 Million dollar street improvement project that replaces the existing bridge which marks the entrance to Wilton Manors.  New landscaping, enhanced traffic signalization asphalt replacement, bikeways and various minor streetscape improvements are also included in the FDOT project.  While all of the improvements will certainly have a positive effect on the Drive, as structured redevelopment project needs to be implemnted.  The proposed project would address business recruitment, business retention, special event programming, streetscape enhancement, and facad improvemens.  In order to carry forth with the vision of the Stakeholder Program a Wilton Drve Development Committee was formed to assist in planning and necessary funds are needed to "jump start" this revitaliztion effort.  With the combined efforts of the City, FDOT and a legislative appropriation, it will be possible for Wilton Drive to be a wonderful example of how the Eastward Ho! inititiative can reviatlize an entire community.
