Project Description:

The Hillsborough Diversionary Demonstration Project will serve to demonstrate the effectiveness of cultural arts programming among youths ages 10-17 who are at-risk of entering or re-entering the juvenile justice system. The program will combine prevention, diversion and intervention components that will greatly enhance and expand the capabilities of a diverse and very experienced coalition in order to reduce high levels of juvenile-based crime.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The proposed program is designed to greatly enhance and intensify JASP's effectiveness and reduce caseloads, and can be replicated as a model throughout the state. Youth who live in the target area and are sanctioned to the JASP Program will receive a cadre of services. The JASP youth and youth in other diversionary and community control programs will also have opporunities to participate in art, dance, theater, martial arts, and gymnastics. They may also take advantage of field trips to exhibits and performances and work with local artists to understand forms of expression and alternatives to lives of crime. Information and referrals to other programs in the University Area Community Center Complex will be offered to parents and siblings.
