Project Description:

We have over two hundred students with sensory, physical and mental diabilities in the most severe range. The School's mission is to provide a loving and caring environment with individualized programs designed for the functioning level of the student.  We believe that each child has inherent potential which cannot be ignored, and our job is to enable them to become as independent as possible.  This will provide them a complex with varied and diverse sensory zones which will provide opportunities for our students to discover, explore, and stimulate the entire spectrum of their sensory and motor skills in a motivating and non-threatening environment.  This facility will include a physical training area with an impact-asorbing floor and wellness area, therapeutic-heated pools, and most importantly, a three-stage multi-sensory stimulation (Snoezelen) suite.  Snoezelen is a high quality sensory stimulation environment developed to satisfy the special perceptual needs of individuals with severe physical, learning and sensory disabilities.  It was designed specifically for children with profound and multiple handicaps, but has been used in the treatment of behavior disorders, Alzheimer's disease and with the severly emotionally disturbed.  This facility will also serve the 4 county area to serve the needs of of the elderly stricken with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, autistic persons, and persons with visual and hearing impairments as well as attention deficit disorders. The medical needs of the elderly and medically fragile will be aided by meeting their comprehensive medical needs such as increasing circulation, freedom and ease of movement, reduction of pain and spasticity. It will be a multi-uses facility benefitting housands of the the oft forgotten who bear heavy burdens not of their own making.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

In addition to facts stated above, this will increase student opportunities to develop many skills (including, communication, motor, and leisure) which will translate into increased participation in the community. A final benefit would be that this facility could become a site for the Florida and district Special Olympic games.
