Project Description:
Legislative budget request for funds to cover Medicaid recipients and state employees for universal newborn hearing screening.
Services Provided/Benefit to State:
The need for early detection and early identification of hearing loss has been well established by experience and well-documented in the professional literature. Research has shown that impairing loss can be detected by age three months and intervention begun by age six months, the negative impact of hearing loss on language development can be minimized. The requested funds are intended to assure that recipients of Medicaid and newborns of state employees receive the services of newborn hearing screening and appreciate the benefit of early detection and early intervention when hearing loss is found.
Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
It will focus on service delivery, the number of children found with hearing impairment, and the educational needs of hearing-impaired children. These outcome measures will be obtained through an information database that currently exists for Children's Medical Service Early Intervention Program and through the database for the state Department of Education.
