Project Description:
According to State documents,290,000 men and 135,000 women are raped in the nations jails and prisons each year. At least 40 percent of Florida inmates who are sexually assauted had also been assaulted before they land behind bars.
Services Provided/Benefit to State:
Fair-Sira is an organization that works to reach out to victims and their families who are sexual abuse in jails and prisons. We seek to increase public awareness, to answer inmates complaints and support the families and to lobby for better laws, outside of the organization funding. We support public policy to provide confidential reporting of sexual abuse, orientation to the danger of sexual abuse for inmates and corrections facility staff, counseling and advocacy services to victims of sexual abuse in jails and prisons, and consulting services to public agencies on ways to reduce the frequency of abuse and to one day have an after care program for inmates of abuse.
Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Increase awareness of sexual violence and its prevention. Provide resource information, Incease the reporting of sexual violence. Implement statewide rape risk reduction public awareness company. Implement data collection.
