Project Description:
This is a major project by dual counties to provide wastewater services along the entire top of Lake Okeechobee. The goal is to bring safe modern sanitary sewers and to provide the type of protection called for in the Restudy Report. The Report specifically calls for attention to this area and the fact that the area needs financial assistance such as this appropriation. The local governments through their utilities have entered into an interlocal agreement to provide these services that will not only provide the protection that the SFWMD has called for in supporting this project, but it will also allow for safe clean economic development in an economically depressed area. There is participation from State, Local, Regional, and Federal Agencies making this a true partnership.
Services Provided/Benefit to State:
This project will protect waters of Lake Okeechobee which is on the FDEP 303 (d) list, from septic intrusion it now receives. This funding will allow for better use of winter visitor space that brings sales tax revenue.
