Project Description:

Renovation of facility to create a focal point for delivery of comprehensive and coordinated services for the senior population in Boynton Beach area.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Phase I of the Boynton Beaach senior center is complete and is currently servicing seniors from Boynton Beach, west Boynton, Lake Worth, Lantana, Briny Breezes, Ocean Ridge, Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Hypoluxo. We have collaborated with the following groups to provide a variety of services to our elderly population that includes AARP-55 Alive Driving Course and Tax Preperation R.S.V.P. - volunteer opportunities for seniors; Bethesda Memorial Hospital-Free Blood Pressure Testing and a Physical Therapist for an exercise program; Delray Medical Center-Free Glucose, cholestorol and prostate testing (Mammograms will soon be offered); Census Burea testing, Hear X-free hearing testing; Aker Kasten Community Outreach Program-Free vision testing; Boynton Beach Transportation-provides shuttle services to the Senior Center and weekly outings; Palm Beach County Health Department-widowed persons counseling. Mae Volen-Hot meals program (served over 2,000 last month). Our Leisure Services Department staff also offers classes and programs that include; Computer classes, free use of computer lab, art and crafts, an open game room for socializing, lectures and guest speakers, dances and concerts, club meetings and special occasion rental space. Phase I has made the facility opreational but lacks many of the essential components for a successful and comprehensive operation. Phase II will provide nearly 5,000 additional square feet to expand the services provided, increase the facility's accessibility and eliminate shared space issues that impact many of the activities currently offered.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The completion of the Senior Center in Boynton Beach will create a much needed focal point in the southern area of Palm Beach County. The Area Agency on Aging (AAOA) also feels there is a need and supports this facility's completion. The percentage of senior adult households in Boynton Beach is approximately 51% and 42% of senior adult households hav incomes below the median family income and 46% survive on limited incomes provided by Social Security. The City of Boynton Beach belives all seniors regardless of income level can benefit from a Senior Center in Boynton Beach, which provides recreation, nutrition, wellness and related social services. By participating in the programs and services provided, seniors from surrounding areas as well as Boynton Beach benefit in the following ways: become more computer literate, enjoy a variety of free services offered in a location close to home, homebound seniors benefit from transportation provided to all of the activities, seniors recieve counseling and have the opportunity to join peer support groups and can participate in classes at a much lower cost than competitors offer in our area. The Leisure Services Department keeps attendance records to document participation and tracks interests for future programs.
