Project Description:

The HIV/AIDS Awareness Project provides information within communities of color regarding the HIV/AIDS virus, which is currently the leading killer of men of color aged 18-45, and the second leading killer of women of color in the same age group.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The HIV/AIDS Awareness Project will promote awareness and prevention of the spread of the HIV/AIDS virus through the use of public service announcements, education classes and group discussions, community forums and other means to promote the avoidance of behaviors that cause the contraction of this deadly disease.  Additionally, People of Color AIDS Coalition, Inc. will provide general support services to persons living with HIV and AIDS in the community.  By providing information and support services, People of Color AIDS Coalition will continue to foster awareness of this dread disease and possibly prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in communities of color in Pinellas County.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

By increasing the number of awareness and prevention programs and outreach efforts, People of Color AIDS Coalition hopes to decrease the number of HIV and AIDS cases in its service area, and thus reduce the number of Medicaid cases resulting from HIV diagnosis of persons who are unable to afford medical care and must rely on the State for their health care needs.
