Project Description:

The San Carlos Institute is one of Florida's most beautiful and historic landmarks.  In 1999 it had the distinction of being chosen as the first Florida affiliate of the prestigious Smithsonian Institution.  In order to maintain this affiliation, the San Carlos will need to hire a curator and professional museum staff and upgrade its operations to Smithsonian standards. The San Carlos seeks a one-time funding from the State for operational expenses to enable it to upgrade its services and retain its status as an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Founded by Cuban immigrants in 1871, the San Carlos stands as a proud symbol of freedom and hope to the nearly 2 million Floridians of Cuban descent.  The San Carlos was one of America's first bi-lingual and integrated schools and served as a cradle of Cuba's indipendence movement.  The cathedral-like building, located in the heart of Key West's historic district, the San Carlos serves as a museum, Library, art gallery, theatre and school.  Thousands of people from around the world visit the San Carlos.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
