Project Description:

The Brandon Main Street Project is a community-based planning project that will be under the direction of Hillsborough County.  The project will expand county services, attract businesses, and bring a focussed economic center to east Hillsborough County, which has become an area of pervasive urban sprawl due to rapid and intense growth.  This project is the result of a study and report conducted by the Community Services Team of the Planning & Growth management Department of Hillsborough County.  A report was issued by the team to the Hillsborough County board of County Commissioners on October 27, 1999.  The lead person on the team, who can answer technical and support questions about the proposal, is Neale Stralow and can be reached at (813)276-8387.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The Brandon area if incorporated would be the 10th largest city in Florida.  Like many older communities the urban core of the Brandon area was developed prior to the advent of Growth Management.  Accordingly, the community lacks a defined downtown focal point.  This fact along with the rapid growth in this area has resulted in tremendous urban sprawl.  The project will provide the Brandon area with a civic, social, and symbolic town center identity.  It will also allow county services to be provided more efficiently and effectively.  With the study findings, planning, and resulting construction, the project will serve as a model for other Florida cities and unincorporated areas that have been the subject of extreme rapid growth.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

A preliminary design and engineering study will be conducted.  The project will result in increased econoomic growth, a concentrated focus on business and civic activities, and a broadening of services at lowered cost to the county that will be available to the citizens of the east Hillsborough County area.
