Project Description:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This project will provide free congregate lunches to 55 elderly in downtown Miami, one of the poorest sections of Miami-Dade County. Demographics indicate a high density of elders who comprise an increasing proportion of its population. All participants are at or below the poverty threshold, aged 60+ (median 70) who attend the Gesu Senior Center. 85% of participants are members of minority groups. No OAA money is available to support this program.

Without adequate nutrition and the stimulus of their companions, the condition of these poor, frail elderly is likely to deteriorate, necessitating their placement in a publically financed nursing facility.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

 

 

 

 

 

- The program is projected to serve 13,915 hot, nutritious luncheon meals per year at a cost of $3.95 per meal.

- Each meal is designed to meet 1/3 the daily requirements in compliance with the dietary guidelines for Americans over 51 years of age as establish by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences. A registered dietician will review the menus for compliance with the dietary guidelines.

- Meal spices are starches will be varied to suit the tastes of participating ethnis groups.

- The meals will be served at a clean, spacious
