Preparing for the Drug Free Years (PDFY) is a research-based program that has proven effective in helping parents of children ages 9-14 protect their children from substance abuse and other delinquent behaviors. PDFY increases protective factors and lowers risk factors that exist in families |

Services Provided/Benefit to State: |

Services will provide a series of workshops at which parents of children ages 9 to 14 get information and development skills in 5 major topics (1) confronting the problem of children's use of drugs, (2) developing a clear family position on drugs,(3) teaching children skills to help them stay out of trouble, (4) containing family conflict and (5) strengthening family bonds. The curriculum of this multi-media skills training program (PDFY), delivered in a 5 or 10 session format, utilizes video segments, workbook exercises and guided discussions to meet clearly defined objectives. Reducing the number of children requiring substance abuse treatment, the State will save $7 for every $1. Keeping families intact and functioning, the State will save the cost of emergency shelters and placements for addicted youth. |
