Project Description:

This project will provide funds for detailed design, procurement and installation of piling or other emergency stabilization structures in the immediate frontal areas of Batteries McIntosh and Mellon on the west shoreline of Egmont Key, during the year 2000.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

This State Park provides an opportunity for historic interpretation and understanding for visitors from the Tampa Bay area, Florida, the U.S. and overseas about a period of U.S. history which is not otherwise well-represented in peninsular Florida.  This project is a rare opportunity to begin the preservation of valuable historic structures which will attract visitors to the State and to the Tampa Bay area.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The installation of emergency stabilization structures will provide immediate protection against further erosion of areas in front of Batteries McIntosh and Mellon.  This will "buy enough time" to start the placement of sand on the beach area, as is currently being planned, by depositing 300,000 to 350,000 cubic yards of sand on the western shore of Egmont Key.  The sand will come from the authorized St. Petersburg Harbor Dredging Project, which is a part of the 1999-2000 Federal Budget.
