Project Description:

Demonstration project to provide funding in order to increase access to and utilization of prenatal care for pregnant women who 1. are uninsured and also not eligible for Medicaid; 2. do not quality for Medicaid due to income and deemed "medically complex" thus raising the cost of care and the income and risk of having a poor birth outcome; and 3. reside in remote areas without prenatal care providers and the lack of ability to access the nearest providers.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The service to be provided is quality, comprehensive clinical prenatal care that ensures that women can access needed services.  The benefits to the state are numerous and include improved birth outcomes, improved child development outcomes, increasing the number of children who enter school ready to learn (school readiness), and significant cost savings as a result of improved outcomes.  For every $1 spent in Florida on comprehensive, quality prenatal care, $11 is saved on special needs services.  An investment of $268,559 to provide prenatal care services through this demonstration project will save Florida taxpayers $2,954,149 that would have been needed to provide special needs services.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The measurable outcomes anticipated include: 1. an increase in the number of women receiving prenatal care; 2. an increase in the number of women entering prenatal care in the first trimester; 3. a decrease in the number of women receiving late or no prenatal care; 4. a reduction in infant mortality; 5. a decrease in infant/child morbidity; and 6. an increase in the number of children entering school ready to learn.
