Project Description:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Edward Waters College is a four year coeducational private institution.  The college is Florida's Oldest independent institution of higher learining as well as the first institution established for the education of African Americans.  Established in 1866, the college strives to promote educational, cultural and spiritual development for all people.  As a core social and educational institiution, EWC is duty bound to develop, implement and maintainn youth programs designed to better the lives of all young people.  The EWC Peer Counseling Training Institute will target youth between the ages of 15 to 17 with career aspirations in one of the Behavorial Sciences.  For the purpose of this program, the Behaviorial Sciences will include Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice and Social Work.  Youth selected for the program will be chosen on the basis of recommendations from school personnel, the clergy, or a community leader.  There will be 50-75 youth selectd for the program with an even mix of males and females.  Youth facilitators will be selected from a pool of college students attending EWC, who, like the participants, have career aspirations in the Behavioral Sciences.  There will be one facilitator per 10 participants.  There will be 6 weeks of training for the facilitators and 12 weeks of instruction for the participants.  The program is designed from the Jessor and Jessor Program which focuses on three systems found to be essential for the development of either positive or negative youth behavior; Social Environment System, Personality System and Behavior System.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

 

 

 

 

 

Provide youth with hands on skills and training in the Social and Behaviorial Science Field, thus making them immediately eligible to join the workforce or further their education in that field with advantages others will not have.  This program  further identifies youth who are not in the juvinile justice system, but who need guidance.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

 

 

 

 

 

Increase in potential trained professionals in the social science field. Decrease in juvenile delinquency in and around the service area.  Enhance skills of EWC students serving as facilitators.  Development of State-wide model program.
