Project Description:

Increase the $43 personal needs allowance to $54 given each month to recipients of the OSS program residing in ALFs or AFCHs.  This amount is intended to cover items of personal needs, not provided by the facility such as personal hygiene items, clothing, haircuts, dental care services, medication and medical supplies not covered by Medicaid and simple non-essential items such as magazines, writing paper, or books.  This allowance has not been increased since 1988 and equals $1.43 a day.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

This is a quality of life issue for the very indigent elderly and mental disabled.  The ability of an OSS recipient to buy a book or go to a movie increases the person?s self-respect and fosters independence.
