Project Description:

The Weed and Seed Youth Leadership Youth Academy is a comprehensive strategy designed to enhance and develop employable skills in youth that have been exposed to the juvenile justice system.  These are three major components to our intensive intervention in-class curriculum: life skills, computer technology, and a computer based workplace simulation.  The integration of life skills is crucial to the success of the project as youth are into internships with local organizations.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Each participant receives 120 hours of classroom cirriculum that includes life skills, workplace readiness and computer technology.  Individual and family assessment case management and outreach services include coordinated referrals and linkages to Weed and Seed's 76 social and economic partners.  After completion of the Academy, participants are enrolled in five months of personalized computer-based tutoring to include literacy, vocabulary, computation skills, and/or SAT/GED prep depending on the participant's skill level.  The State benefits by reduced recidivism rates, the development of productive contributors to the State economy and will help to bridge the digital divide between the inner city and the rest of the world.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

a) Recruit and enroll 120 youth; b) 100% of those completing the program shall possess job readiness skills; c) 100% of the 2000 youth and their families shall be provided coordinated case management services, as well as economic and social service referral; d) 70% of the 200 youth shall increase their Miami-Dade County Public Schools grade point average by at least one half grade point on a four point scale, and; e) 100% of those completing the program will publish their own web page on the Internet.
