Project Description:

The area where Lee, Glades, Hendry and Charlotte counties come together is known as the four corners area. This particular region experiences prolonged periods of inundation every rainy season.  The appropriation would support the improvement in flow beneath the County Road 78 bridge which currenly functions as a "choke point" for flows from the area. The existing bridge at CR 78 can handle 620 cfs. With the improvements to the County Line ditch the capacity needs increased to 1500 cfs.  The project would replace the existing bridge with three 10' x 8' box culverts.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The appropriation would support the improvement in flow beneath the County Road 78 bridge which currenly functions as a "choke point" for flows from the area.  Once completed the project will provide an increased level of flood protection to a 23 square mile area, a reduction in the risk to public health and safety, as well as the minimization of risk to property damage resulting from flood impacts.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The overall project will restore the natural flows in Jack's Branch, Spanish Creek, Ft Denaud Branch and Bee Branch to the Caloosahatchee River.  The County Line ditch will have weir structures and conveyance to relieve flooding but to retain the water during the dry season in the natural system.  This will remove overdrainage while providing water quality protection.
